chicago attractionChicago, Illinois is on the southwestern shores of Lake Michigan. In its history in the mid-1700s, the last known Native Americans to live in the region were the Potawatomi tribe. Although the United States built a fort in the area in 1803 and it was destroyed during the War of 1812, the Potawatomi people signed over the land in 1833 with the Treaty of Chicago. Officially a city since 1837, Chicago has grown steadily since to become the third largest of the cities in the United States with only New York City and Los Angeles having a higher population count.

Today, Chicago is a world-class and exciting place with its rich history, its cultural diversity and successful growth. Here are some of its currently most popular attractions:

Art Institute of Chicago
This amazing museum within a building that is a good example of Classical Renaissance architecture is situated near Millennium Park. The building is stunning and the collections are definitely worth seeing with the great artists of modern and ancient times. Western, Impressionistic and Asian art are among the displayed genres.

Chicago Cultural Center
This architectural landmark first opened in the late 1890s as a public library. The perfect place to start on a first visit to the city, the Chicago Cultural Center has information on attractions and pamphlets. Free to enter, the building with its Tiffany Dome is spectacular. Free public events like concerts or dance performances are held in this venue. Upstairs is a reading room and free internet access.

Chicago Shakespeare Theater on the Navy Pier
Now the Navy Pier has much to see and do with walkways and restaurants as well as entertainment venues, and the Shakespeare Theater is well loved. A small theater, all seats are near to the stage and all the action. Whatever plays, guests enjoy an evening in this great little theater.

Lake Michigan
The beaches and waters of Lake Michigan are a draw on any day that is warm. Biking along the shore, playing at the beach and boating are some of the activities the lake offers. Some people watch and others get out and engage in a variety of water sports. The beaches are excellent for picnics and barbecues.

Millennium Park
This incredible park is part of the larger Grant Park. The new parklands opened in 2004. Several features make this a great place to be in Chicago such as many public events, the Crown Fountain and the phenomenal and huge sculptures by top contemporary artists. The ice skating rink is a favorite spot, and the entire area is excellent for walking and taking photos.
