Newport Folk Festival

Newport Folk Festival History
Established in 1959 by the same founder of the Newport Jazz Festival, George Wein, the Newport Folk Festival today is one of America's top folk music festivals. Held every year during the last weekend in July, the Newport Folk Festival features a lineup of live performances by musicians of folk, country, bluegrass, blues and folk rock as well as folk indie and punk genres. The festival is a popular spotlight venue for emerging musicians, and as a result, many famous entertainers have gained their first audiences while performing at the festival. Some of these famous musicians include Joan Baez, Bob Dylan and Kris Kristofferson.

Every year, the festival is headlined by renowned artists such as Jimmy Buffet, Linda Rondstadt, Emmylou Harris, the Magnetic Zeros and the Dap Kings. Jackson Browne and My Morning Jacket headlined the 2012 festival. Much of the 53 year history of the Newport Folk Festival has been preserved by many recordings, Internet streaming and live broadcasts.

The Newport Folk Festival is hosted annually in Newport, Rhode Island at the Fort Adams State Park. Situated right at the Newport Harbor, the Fort Adams State Park offers a beautiful setting of four performance stages, refreshing breezes off of the glimmering water and a scenic landscape. In addition to great live music, the Newport Folk Festival also offers children's fun activities as well as food and craft vendors.

Food and Craft Vendors
Food choices range from all-American foods like hamburgers, hot dogs, BBQ pulled pork and Philly Cheese Steak to seafood and Asian cuisine such as Chinese spring rolls, Thai noodles and sushi. Visitors can also opt for pizza, Greek gyros and baklava as well as desserts like cakes and Ben & Jerry's ice cream bars.

A wide variety of crafts include woodcrafts, leather crafts, hand blown glass, watercolors and handcrafted folk musical instrument such as fiddles. Others include hand-stitched tapestries and children's clothing, homemade soaps and hand crafted jewelry with precious gems and sterling silver.

Over the years, the Newport Folk Festival has striven to be a green-friendly event by partnering with groups such as the Rhode Island Resource Recovery and Clean Water Action. These groups recycle tons of trash collected from the event site. Another partner of the festival, CLIF Bar, arranges a two-mile bike challenge where participants can cycle to the event instead of driving. Klean Kanteen joined in with the festival to offer reusable water bottles while the Farm Fresh Rhode Island teamed up to provide fresh, local foods. Other green efforts taken by the festival include selling beer in plant-based, compostable containers.
