Miami Information

MiamiMiami, at the southeast end of the Florida peninsula, is a lively city with a subtropical climate and an international spirit. It is a center of commerce, finance, entertainment and trade. With beautiful sand beaches, nightlife, shopping, cultural events and cruises, Miami offers visitors many activities to enjoy.

History of Miami
The Tequesta Indians were the first inhabitants of the area that would become Miami. Later, Spanish explorers came to the area, such as Pedro Menendez de Aviles who claimed the area for Spain in 1566. Miami functioned as a fort during the Second Seminole War. In the late 1800s, Henry Flagler built a railroad to the area, and in 1896, Miami was officially incorporated as a city. Miami continued to grow during the 1920s, despite periodic land busts. During World War II, Miami became an important post against German submarines. After the war, many people came to live in this sunny spot and the area grew in population and importance throughout the rest of the 20th century.

The north side of the city is a neighborhood with a mix of ethnic group, as well as some of the wealthiest homes in the city. The western section is home to Little Havana with its Cubans and Central American immigrants. Downtown is the central business district with banks, parks, schools and cultural attractions. East of the downtown area is South Beach and Biscayne Bay. In the southern section of the city, Coral Gables and Coconut Grove offer a look at the trendy section with its restaurants, nightclubs and shops.

Miami offers visitors a number of museums for all types of interests, including the Miami Children’s Museum, Miami Science Museum, Frost Art Museum, Miami Art Museum and the Vizcaya Museum and Gardens.

Zoo Miami
The Miami Metro Zoo is one of the top ten museums in the country with animals from around the world. A number of wildlife presentations are given throughout the day, along with giraffe and pelican feeding, camel rides, behind-the-scenes tours and interactive exhibits.

Miami Outdoors
For sun lovers and outdoors-men, Miami offers its expanses of beaches for fishing, cruising, snorkeling, scuba diving and just relaxing. A number of golf courses are in the area, as well as tennis courts, bike paths and hiking trails.

Sports Teams
For sports fans, Miami offers games by the Miami Heat basketball team, the Miami Dolphins football team, the Miami Marlins baseball team and the Florida Panthers hockey team. College sports teams are also big in the city.
